Sourcing a tiny drip in my trunk (W123)
I noticed there's a tiny drip on the passenger-side of my trunk up by the shock each time it rains. No water has accumulated yet, but I'd like to figure out the source of this moisture. My car has a sunroof. Is this a classic symptom of something like a clogged sunroof drain?
Thanks for any insight out there. Doug 1983 300D (no rust... yet) |

Rear windshield gasket leaks will drip on the either side of the trunk liner over the wheel wells.

Be thankful it is a drip. I get to shop vac out my truck, passenger side after every rain.

Thanks for the insight into this. So it's the rear window seal. Is this a function of age or will it possibly still drip if I changed the gasket?

It's age. A new, properly fitting gasket should stop the leaking.

I have had some success cleaning under the gasket and resealing with windshield caulk (not regular silicone) but if its been leaking a while theres rust under there. The rear gasket on my 85 started to show a drip on one side and I fixed that, figuring there wasn't time for any rust to start. A new gasket on my higher mileage 79 fixed the problem but the glass shop had to deal with a little rust under there.

If it's dripping as far back into the trunk as the wheel wells, it's the rear windshield seal. If it's further towards you, it's possible it's just the seal around the trunk lid. If you look carefully under the lip where the trunk lid seal is, you'll notice that the metal is made of multiple pieces, and so not necessarily watertight.
