Straight out of my Haynes manual:

Quote:
The manual four-or five-speed transmission used on these models features syncromesh on all forward speeds. The four-speed and five-speed variations are very similar with the fifth gear of the five-speed located in a housing on the rear of the transmission. As a result, many of the repair procedures are similar.
My guess is that this rear housing makes the parts non-interchangeable with the commonly available 4-speed from the 240D.

Question posed now, are the transmissions the same except for that fifth gear housing? If so, we might just be able to order kits containing the housing gears and other mechanical components.

That's a totally accurate guess. Maybe some of the persons with the aluminium 5-speeds (717.xxx) can chime in and tell us how similar are the transmission.

The thing here is that Gurkha mentioned that his provider only makes the iron transmissions, not the aluminium ones. Not sure if the internals are the same...

The only diff I can see between the 4 and 5 is that the 5th gear lever is aft of its normal place on the 5th gear housing thats tacked on. I am fairly certain they are interally similar. Tear down with pics come this winter to a forum near you.

my fiver is a one piece aluminum jobbie. A Getrag I think.

My haynes book does not show one, just the iron case with the extra fifth gear housing on the back.

I have wondered if there might be a factory kit for the change to five speeds on the iron housing style trannies.

The GL275 is the aluminum unit.

The 717.x is the iron box gearbox.

The book I'm looking at has an identical service hatch (where the levers are mounted) for the four and five speeds, and the levers are exactly the same, except the lower of the three is inverted and used for reverse and fifth.

Forced has seized/damaged a five-speed but I'm not sure if its the iron box or aluminum one. Maybe he can shed some light?

This further complicates things.

I'll clear a space on the bench for transmission rebuild and maybe take pics this weekend.

Another problem 'we' might run into, it that parts can cost more than or close to an entire assembly. 'We' could though see if it could be ordered as a kit. That might be less expensive than individual parts. Of course if 'we' had someone on the inside (Force), then it might make things easy.

Just a quick questions, does anyone knows the part number of the 5-speed manual transmission used in the diesel W201? You know, like the 190D 190D 2.5 etc...

I have a couple of ideas but I need that number to verify something before posting them. I don't want to waste your time with "factless" ideas...

I just found the anwer to my own question. The part number is:

124 260 0701 7174110 - 1207569

If you look at the picture, that thing looks a lot like the 4-speed and the 5-speed from a w123 (except for the starter bump on the opposite side).

My bet is that its possible to use the bell half (front) of the housing from a 4 speed and attach the rear half of the W201 gearbox to it... But who knows...
