But can you do it with a 617?
I think a W126 300SD with all the underbody panels in place, a VGT, and possibly a manual gear box could do it...

well I did spend 2 hours in stop and go traffic.
On the highway the 2.24 rear works wonders, in the city its a bit of a chore.

Luckily I don't have to.
[QUOTE=bgkast;1931296]But can you do it with a 617?QUOTE]
Fortunately for me, I don't have to try to get 40mpg with a 617. My experience with W201's and OM601's and 602's tells me that it's pretty easy to hit 40mpg with a small car and a 601/602 engine. My experience with W116's and OM617's tells me that it would be extremely difficult to hit 40 mpg in a 116, 123, or 126 with an OM617, and that even if you did, the car would have to be driven in such a way that you might as well have a W201/OM601 combo. I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from trying to hit 40mpg with a 617. In fact, if anyone can take me for a drive in their legitimate 40mpg (US gals), 617 powered automobile, I would be happy to take them out for a nice steak dinner. SteveM.

I'd be a happy buyer.
I'd be happy to buy your dinner if you show up with a 40mpg 617 powered Jetta, Opel Manta, Studebaker Hawk, or belly tank lakester. Of course, if somebody builds the lakester, I might have to ride on the outside, straddling it like a horse. At that point, I just need a ride to the steakhouse.

Icefire will be there if he swaps on a GT2056V VGT for the ancient T3 turbo. On my car it was good for at least a 10% increase in fuel economy. 110% of Icefire's 36.14 MPG is 39.75.
