Its probably closer to 39 than 93. actually about 55 hp, IIRC.

I would not assume that there is anything wrong with a 1963 diesel that smokes black. The older they are the more they smoked when new.

It sounds like a nice fun car!

Their is no redline on diesels, the IP limits the RPM. Put your foot down it should come up to around 5kish.

On a car thats been sitting that long change ALL the fluids and filters, don't forget the trans, rear end, brake, coolant, PS, and oil. A good sorting out when you first buy an old MB is important.

I'd be surprised if one that old will get much above 4000 rpm.

Thanks Tom. It probably is 55 hp. Feels like it.

Oh, also the car is actually a 1984... not a 1963. I wish it was a 63' model!

Thanks Hat. I guess its where I remember seeing a redline mark on my uncles V8 diesel Suburban.

Good to know I can safely get it to 4000 rpms.

Yes, I will change those fluids soon. Oil, oil filter and air filter first. Then I will do the tranny fluid (I assume these have filters too? Some cars do not) and then the coolant (its got green coolant now). She said the brake fluid was changed when new brakes were put in before it was parked.

Mercedes diesels are not like a "real" diesel. IE like in a boat or dump truck with a redline of just over 2k. Heck 1,800 rpm with the Cummins in my uncles GM dump truck feels like the end of the world! Or the big MTU's in my friends boat, 1,400 rpm is a lot out of those things!

These are light high speed diesels, like a Yanmar, little Volvo, or Vetus. Which means they will spool up to about as fast as a diesel can. After a certian RPM want to say its like 4,500ish the combustion starts following the piston. So a diesel can only spin so fast.

As a result they don't last quite as long.

No. Who would want to?

How did you know it was the 601?
