1985 300 turbo diesel alt

My car would not turn over a week ago so I charged the battery and it started. The battery light, brake pad wear light, brake light, and the low fuel lights did not go out. So I put my voltage meter into the cig lighter and no added voltage with acceleration, just a drain. Replaced alt and now a week later I have just the opposite problem. At acceleration I have 16 volts!!! I thought that the 1985 alt had an internal voltage regulator.

The only thing that is from the old alt is the little square box that is screwed on to the alt and plugs into the spare slot.
Is there an other voltage regulator in the car.

Forum members have reported mixed results w/Autozone parts. I'd return it for another. Better yet, get a factory part.

So you think it is the internal voltage regulator and that i should return it. Then buy the 40 dollar used oem one a guy with a 240 D is try to sell me.

The internal regulator is more likely a suspect than the rest of the alternator, or so I have read many times here in this forum.

If it were mine, I would have replaced the voltage regulator in the original alternator. But because you bought a rebuilt you probably cannt get yours back. So, get another alternator from the same store but have it tested before leaving the store. Running your car at 16 volts will shorten the batterys life as well as all light bulbs and radio.

I have not given autozone my old alternator yet! So I might tell them to refund my money and just buy a voltage regulator. If they refuse I will tell them to replace the headlight that burned out tonight due to the surging power. I might also say that it caused the cruise control to fail $$$$$.
