Is this the oil filter? Use MB filters? (first time changer!)
 

When I had my 85' 380SE, I used genuine MB oil filters.

Would it be wise to continue to do so on my 190D, or is there another highly recommended brand?

Lastly, in this photo is that the oil filter by the power steering pump? Is this like the conventional screw-on filters, or does this have the insert type filter?

Lastly, this will be the first time I have ever changed the oil on a diesel engine (if I change it myself). Are there any special steps I take, or is it just the same as changing the oil on a gasser? Simply drain old oil, remove old filter, install new filter, install new oil and good to go? I just do not want to mess anything up.

My uncle has a diesel truck and he does his own changes, so I may get him to do it for the first time. :D

The filter next to your PS pump is one of the fuel filters, not an oil filter. I believe your oil filter is housed on the driver's side near the back of the engine ... you access it from above the car, just undo two bolts and pull off the lid and old filter. I may be wrong, but that's how it is in the 87 300D and I believe the 201s are similar. I would use genuine MB filters. They aren't that expensive and you know you're using a good product. But yeah, it's pretty much just drain the old oil, swap out filters, and add new oil. Remember to replace the large O-ring that goes around the top of the filter housing (the new rubber ring comes with the filter) and the crush washer on the oil pan drain bolt (also comes with the filter). Eeks... shows how much I know.. LOL. Well, I did think it looked more like fuel lines running to it rather than oil lines.

I will head down to the Mercedes dealer on Tuesday and get a couple of new filters. If I recall, they were only like $5 or $6 when I had my 380SE. Thanks!

Quite right; from the pic it looks like you have the 2.5L engine (5 cyl, right?). Look at the very back of the engine on the driver's side; you will see a metal can between the engine and the firewall..that is the filter housing.

remove the filter cover before you drain the oil so the oil in the filter housing can drain into the pan. My $.02 Don

No, but close.... its the 2.2L 4-cylinder. Should be the same though?
