Hummph... According to that I'm saving almost $3200/year (30,000 commuting miles) by leaving my SD parked... Of course my motorcycle gets 57 mpg... maybe that might have something to do with it!

Thats pretty good! It would only cost me about $300-$500 more a year to run a gas V8 W140 at the currant price difference.

It just confirms that if you are better off with a gas car unless you drive a lot. 10k or less a year get the gas MB.

Not really. Compared to a 280E I still save money.

Gas $3.71
Diesel $4.50

280E 20mpg
My car 28mpg

8,000miles/year

Fuel cost per year:
Gas $1,484.00
Diesel $1,285.71
Savings $198.29

It's costing me an extra $375.00 per year to run the diesel at the moment. Compared to the Grand Marquis.

Yeah but if you compare say a 2005 E320CDI, vs an E350 it comes out about the same. And you can get the same year and mileage E350 for probably a few grand cheaper. So it would take MANY years for the diesel to come out ahead.

Next January, we forum members would like you to choose a nice spot on the Yellowhead Highway east of Jasper and take a picture of you riding your bike. Just for fun. Please?

I compare apples to apples.

A Mercedes S-Class to a Mercedes S-Class. Of the same vintage.

So, a 300SEL vs a 300SDL.

300SEL = 21 mpg. Cost per gallon = 3.89

300SDL = 28 mpg. Cost per gallon = 4.50

Fuel cost 300SEL = 1856.67
Fuel cost 300SDL = 1610.36

Savings = 246.31

So I save about $500 per year (I drive at least 20K) with the diesels with current prices. Not significant, but the fact that the diesel has a first gear start and plenty of get-up-and-go when IP is tweaked more than makes up for it.

Would save $1090.16 per year if I drove the 190D (31 mpg) to work instead of my Grand Ville (10 mpg) based on 5000 miles per year!!!

I normally drive my Lexus though that gets 20 mpg. Compared to that, I would be saving $192.

Neat link, thanks for posting it.

...but when they finally sell the car they'll make back that few grand and then some.

Yes and no, you pay less up front on the gas car and get less on the backside. It probably works out about even in the end.

Thats why diesels won't really take off, the costs are about the same and most people don't want to put up with them. You have to really want one.

Now if you drive 50k a year, well its another story. But most people don't.

I just did a service today (I'm a mercedes technician) on a 2008 ML320cdi (sold Nov 2007) that had 63,000 miles on it... I'm sure they are reaping the benefits of the better mileage.

Also the average mileage on their instrument cluster was 27.4 mpg...

That's definitely impressive!
