I shipped two EGR kits to Canada via USPS.

Both kits took 3 months to arrive at the respective destinations. Apparently, Canada customs didn't like the paperwork and didn't know how to charge for the duty............so, they just let them sit.

Finally, they delivered them with the statement "Do not deliver in Canada" scrawled across one of the packages.

I would not ship to Canada via USPS unless the recipient accepts full risk of loss. Canadian customs is abysmal.

I hear you loud and clear Brian.
Funny thing though...I spend...I would say about 100.00 or more a month on flee bay,and every time I win I ask the seller to strictly send via USPS,because all other companies charge you with brokerage fees that are sometimes more expensive then the item you've purchased!
But your probably right.Mind you I never had to wait an awful long time for anything i buy in the states.
Regards
Dan

How do you get around the customs situation with e-bay goods? Any value requires a customs payment and USPS is not equipped to handle this transaction.

If the purchase is over $100.00,you will only pay Goods and services taxes and a $7.00 flat fee for handling. If it below $100.00 they wont even look at it.It will be sent to you with no fees what so ever.

How do they handle the fees? The post office won't handle it. Do they send you a notice to come and get it?

In the first place merchandise coming in to Canada from the Usa is usually duty free. The policy I believe is anything 20.00 or less is not challenged or charged for at all. Called duty free as such in general. Many times items over twenty dollars are just let through as well but a Canadian should never count on it.

Over 20.00 you can be charged the individual Canadian provinces sales tax and federal sales tax combined on the total listed value. This is usually about 13 percent in Nova Scotia.

Coming in by usps the Canadian post office system charges an additional five dollar handeling fee. So the item may appear at your door with the postal employee collecting the money or a notice to pick the item up at the post office and pay there. So in general this is a satisfactory arrangement.

Ups and fedex charge very punitive rates. I think fedex is the worse and can list six or seven additional separate charges to the reciepient of the item. I have heard real horror stories so make sure to list the item as having a value of less than twenty dollars if you ship an item to Canada via ups or fedex. They are then not allowed to add any fees.
Mail it usps prefferably to give your customer a break otherwise. We canadians well understand the possibility of loss. Statistically it is just a much better deal for us .

The Canadian recipient can pay an extremely high percentage of the items initial cost on his incoming item otherwise. With the low valuation that a lot of american vendors already know to apply to their Canadian shipments automatically. The system generally seems to work well in my opinion.

Just for general information when Canadian goods are mailed to the United States no value under two hundred dollars attracts any attention from american customs I understand. So it is a ten to one ratio on what each country allows it's citizens as so called duty free import.

By and large usps is very good in conjunction with the Canadian post office in getting goods delivered to Canadian customers. I for example have never yet had an order go astray where the shipper mailed usps. I also know that usps does have problems internally when delivering within the states.

Overall it's just a big game offiicals involved know about. Since our small private transactions are not considered a true comercial transaction Customs is pretty lienient. I feel they are busier screening for dangerous goods in small private transactions or barred substances and items. This again especially applies on items being mailed between two private individuals. True commercial transactions between two companies are another story entirely. On these the due dilligence by canadian customs is really done in spades.

By the way I understand there are to be major punitive import cost changes to oriental goods entering the states in the near future. It may not be all that bad as something has got to pay for changes to your medical system that are coming and your national accumulating debt load. May hopefully be an attempt to save a higher percentge of the american industry still left than possible otherwise. If thats the case it is more than a little overdue in my opinion.
Anyways glad to hear our member has not been scammed after all. That is never an enjoyable feeling when it occurs.

Ok I'll give you an example.
The other week I bought some camera equipment from the US.One purchase was 118.00$US.
The second purchase was from the US also and total amount was 185.00$ US.
Got the first delivery and Canada Post dove up the drive way and gave me a package and told me the amount I had to pay was 15.26$ CDN.Break down is this 7% of 118.00$ is 8.26 + a flat fee of 7.00$ CDN grand total was 22.26$ CDN.The next order should arrive soon.
If the purchase is over 100.00$ you will pay Goods and Services tax on it + a 7.00 flat fee for handling.

The problem

A guy goes to the Post Office to apply for a job. The interviewer asks him, 'Have you been in the services?'

Yes,' he says. 'I was in the armed forces for three years.'

The interviewer says, 'That will give you extra points toward employment', and then asks, 'Are you disabled in any way?'

The guy says, 'Yes, 100%. A mortar round exploded near me and blew my testicles off.'

The interviewer tells the guy, 'OK, I can hire you right now. The hours are from 8:00 AM till 5:00 PM. You can start tomorrow. Come in at 10:00 AM'

The guy is puzzled and says, 'If the hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM , then why do you want me to come in at 10:00 AM?'

'This is a government job', the interviewer says. 'For the first two hours we stand around scratching our balls. No point in you coming in for that.

Unfortunately, I avoid USPS whenever possible. Its very difficult to track their delivery. I am partial to UPS myself as they are very trackable and always come thru in domestic and international service. Fedex is not bad either.

I had a similar situation with a part that I sold to someone in the UK via USPS through my ebay store. Long story short is that the package was never delivered, no trace of it in the system after it left Jacksonville, FL and 7 months later it shows up at my doorstep with a rejection notice from a UK postal station as "non deliverable" or something along those lines. Never quite found out why or what went wrong
