1980 300SD vs 1982 300 SD

Hey Folks,

I'm looking at a 1982 300SD and I have a 1980 300 SD. The question is how much of the drive train is the same. What parts are interchangeable? The old 80 will get driven as long as she can and it would be nice if it could be a parts donner for the 82 someday. I would like to put the 82 in storage for future use.

Any info would be great.

The 1980 is a w116 and the 1982 is a first generation w126.

The only thing I know for sure will work on both cars is the OM617.

Basically the same with different oil pans, engine mounts and transmission. The 82 will have the "05" camshaft which wears better, offers a little more power.
The 80 engine will fit into the later chassis but not the other way around due to the oil pan differences.

The '1st gen' W126s were from 81-85. In '86 some changes were made hence '2nd gen'.

Chad is correct, as always.

We're talking about comparing the two cars, which are 1980 and 1982 model years respectively. You're talking about the first year the W126 was released in the US.

Go for it.

If the other models in the MB lineup are any indication, the W126 should drive and feel a bit more "modern" than the W116 model.

What was the first model year for the W116?

I say buy the '82 and start racking up the miles.

1972-1980

I believe the 300SD w116 was only 1979 and 1980.

EDIT: Nope according to this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W116

it was 1977-1980

Very little, other than some bits off the engine.

They are very different cars, both are excellent in their own ways.

Yeah, I would love a 1978, 1979 or 1980 300SD! These cars just had a certain look about them that screamed "Class".

I have had both and I think you will like your 80 better. I like the 126 but to me the 116 is the ultimate Mercedes. They just drive good and I think they look good. I have had two 1983 126 and one 1984. I only had them for about a year and have kept my 80 for 8 years. I love that car!!!!!! The door lock plungers on the inside will work I was surprised to see the lock plungers were the same on my 1996 e320 as my 1980.
