If you want to do like the guy in the video did you need to use the same boots he did. As others have indicated not all boots are created equal.

Dan, I guess we could find the correct boot kit and give it a try. We could always practice on old Silver's half shafts.......

Astoria Flexx boots

Has anyone had success installing the FB3001 boots using a cone?

Status report

Questionable axles returned to Carquest with a full refund. They were kind enough to offer a phone number of a shop near here that rebuilds axles.

I have the old ones cleaned up, boots removed and noticed my balls are nice and shiney. CV joint balls...

I'll carry them to the axle shop this week and see if they can install new boots. Otherwise, I'm hoping the cone will work to install the Flexx boot.

Well, we hopefully won't have to worry about using the cone now.

I got this from ebay last week and it arrived today. I was upset with the shipping charges, but apparently I didn't know the size of this thing.
An Astoria FB5000 Flexx boot installer.

Came with a very effective carrying case.

I put the Diet Coke can next to it for size scale.

It also came with a tool for tightening the clamps on the boots. A nice little extra.

Now that I have it and I tested it operation, it is time to order some Astoria FB3001 boots and some clamps and grease and see what happens.

Dan, I guess we need to do a couple of yours too..... {man Dan, think of the damage I could do if I clubbed you over the head with that thing!}

Wow Jimmy ... cool tool!

Don't go horsin' around with that thing. It looks like it could do a lot of damage.

Yep, that may have to end up being my super hero weapon. Might have to snap a more cooperative pic......

Jeez Jimmy $150 + S+H, I hope you'll be lending that out to your buddies here, or at least starting a rebuild service....

It's kind of like valve adj. wrenches. They are pretty much always going to be worth what you pay for them, so at some point if you decide to sell then your cash outlay was minimal.
Besides, me and Dan have enough boot issues to make this more than worth my while.....
I provide the Flexx gun, he provides the forehead with a large target stenciled on.......

I hope it only the forehead that gets it. That thing could leave some serious stretch marks.

I guess I failed to follow up...

I temp installed some axles pulled from a parts car that I hauled off from Jimmy. He must have missed snatching 'em off beforehand.

The original axles are cleaned up and ready for new boots. After talking to the axle shop I decided the Flexx boot looks to be the best option in my opinion. It is the least invasive repair since the axle CVs do not have be disassembled. Their "hammer" method of disassembly didn't sound very elegant to me.

I will get us 8 of the Astoria FB3001 Flexx boots ordered along with about 20 clamps. I need to figure out which clamps I need to buy that go with my clamping pliers I got with the Flexx gun.
We also need to discuss what grease we're gonna use also.....
