How hard is it to get to the filter inside a 300TD fuel tank?

Just took a trip on I-89 to NH and back and the car was a dog on the hills. New prefilter. It seems like I have a fuel restriction most likely due to the pick up inside the tank on my 1985 300TD. If I take the prefilter off my fuel doesn't leak out of the supply line coming from the tank. I see a large allen headed bolt in the bottom of the tank. I've got an extra tank that I emptied in my parts wagon, maybe I'll drop that one out of the car to get a better look. Looks like my lift pump needs to be replaced as the manual pump ist Kaput.

Thanks,
Dave

Reverse the supply and return fuel lines and see if it still gives you trouble, before taking apart your fuel tank -- no sense doing that work if you don't need to.

That bolt in the bottom of the tank is the tank strainer. Here's a diagram I drew to help explain. The tank in a wagon has two chambers.

EDIT: That bolt in the pic is another option some use as a tool to remove the strainer. I use a 15/16" spark plug socket turned backwards on an extension like this:

the allen key is the filter. remove it, and replace. or clean and reinstall.
realize all fuel in the tank is held in by the screen.

primer pumps are replaceable.

Kerry suggests a great method of draining the tank prior to removing the tank screen/strainer. Run your car until you are under 5 gallons left, then pull the fuel return line off under the hood and run it into a fuel can. Let the car run until it stalls out and your fuel tank is empty and ready to remove the strainer. Just keep a pan or wad of shop rags under to catch any remaining drips. The added benefit of this method is that the fuel is getting filtered as it goes into the fuel can and can be dumped right back in the tank when you're ready.
