Just curious if your still totaling it or fixing it. Ive had the chance to see a craigslist car and I think you might be interested. its a w116 chassis 300SD that needs an engine and transmission. Body is straights, paint is decent, interior is normal for an old car, not to bad but not to good. Mileage however is incredible at 560,000 miles.

I know this car firsthand and something about it

I was there, and saw the car the day it was purchased, this May I think, by murdoc, in Oakland, and looked carefully through the books and records that were provided that day. Other Mercedes friends of his were there too.

It was purchased brand new at Downtown LA Motors Mercedes Benz, (in fact it still had the original license plate frame on the back from there), and has been a lifetime southern and northern (SF bay area) California car, which means there are NO rust issues going on with it.

The records, when I leafed through them, showed a a paper trail of pretty good maintenance, from brand new, and also, an unbroken chain of California title, and from what we saw, (Diametrical Benz and some others of us looked real carefully at it) no evidence of any real heavy collision prior damage.

The mileage on the whole car was well under 175,000, and while not perfect by any means, it looked like a very good and decent car. The motor on it was the only real issue at the time, which as I recall was only this past May.

For those reasons, and addition to the relative simplicity of repairs as explained above, I would definately urge the car be retained and repaired.

It is way too nice to be junked, though to me, judging from these pictures, the quarter panel damage seems to suggest a body man was there before.

yeah, that looks way too nice to send to the yard. In my region all MB's in the yard have succumbed to horrible rust or have frame damage. Climb under there and assess the damage, between will and the support of the forum, she'll be good as new in no time.

ps-in relation to the W116 posted above, if you do a engine swap on a car with that many miles and drive it the obligatory 440K miles, can you clam fame to the 1million miles club? (provided records of course). . .If so, Id be all over it. . .

turbobenz- You need a new camera. I keep thinking the things you post pictures of have red graffiti on them.

Wow that is bad but not as bad as I thought it would be. I remember that the other side was scraped but not anywhere as bad as the person who hit it.

I am surprised that they bothered to leave a note.
