What is this valve?

Hello All,

I was looking under the hood of my some what newly accuired '83 300sd and noticed this vaccuum valve was abandoned. As you can se one hose was removed and the other cut off.

I am wondering what it is and how its used.

If you are having technical difficulties with pictures, a general desrciption will probably work. Odds are, it's the EGR control valve (if on the valve cover) or the boost protection switchover valve (between the intake manifold and ALDA.) The latter is not a vacuum valve, but it looks like one.

Sorry about the picture.

The valve is located on the firewall near the brake booster. It has an electrical connection and two places for hoses, I'm assuming vacuum.

I'm sorry I haven't figured out how to attach an image.

Sounds like the over boost protection solenoid. I can't remember off the top of my head where the two lines go maybe someone else can chime in.

No, it's not vacuum. Pressure from the intake manifold is "transmitted" through the valve to the ALDA to allow for proper fuel delivery. The valve itself is a safety feature to prevent overboost. If the line from the manifold to the ALDA is not connected, you are going to think you got a new engine when you hook things back up. If the valve has just been bypassed, it would be a real good idea to restore things to the proper configuration.
