heater seems always on -76 300D

Even here in the great white north the mercury can be in the low 90s in august.

My newly acquired 76 300D runs great but I always seem to get a flow of warm air on my legs (and the passenger's legs also). The fan-defrost work great and I get a good flow of cool air on face and windshield but always warm air on the legs despite the correct position (according to owner's manual) of hvac controls. Car does not overheat, temp gauge stays at 185 when warmed up.

Any ideas?

a hole somewhere in the firewall.Like maybe the rubber cover that is for the steering column.or one of the smaller holes for an accessory, maybe their sealing grommets are bad.

I'm wondering if you're sure it's warm air out the top vents or if it's just blowing by you that it "feels" cooler than what comes out the bottom. I'm guessing you have a bad valve or vacuum leak at the vent controls. I'm far from an expert on this but had a similar problem.

Can someone else comment?

Bill

Possible but unlikely as the passenger also gets warm air at the legs...

It's definitely cool air at the top vents and warm air at the bottom...

I would suggest you try this question in the Vintage Mercedes section. There is not a lot of 115 knowledge here in the Diesel section. Climate control on those is quite a bit different from the later models.

Stupid question: Is the fan on when this happens or the fan off while cruising?

Also, could you take a picture of your ac controls. If this is the older controls, there is a lever in the middle that controls the ouside air. If so, this will always be cooler air. If heat comes out at the bottom, the mod valve (if it has one) maybe torn.

Eureka!!!

Stupid me, if the 2 red levers are moved to the center, I dont get any warm air on the legs. I should have known this since this is not my first 114/115.

Sorry about that, and again thanks for helping me out!
