fuel leak

Howdy,

this is my first post on this forum, so please excuse me if this is a noob question.

I have a fuel leak on my 1980 240D which appears to be coming from around the LARGE fitting on the bottom of my fuel tank. I attempted to tighten it with a large socket, but to no avail.

It is currently leaking at a rate of about one drop per second.

Is this a common issue? Is there a rubber gasket or o-ring that is prone to deteriorating and must be replaced? OR is this something most remedy with replacing the fuel tank?

Thanks,

Wes

That is the tank screen that is leaking. There is an o-ring underneath that seals the screen to the tank. Here is a photo of the screen. Unfortunately you have to empty the tank to get it out to replace the o-ring. It could also be leaking at the joint where the hose threads into the tanks screen.

yeah, large fitting would be tank screen. you need a new o-ring you may be able to get away with a rubber conditioning fuel additive for a short while, if that works at all.

I recently had both of those hoses replaced on my SD. The mechanic mentioned he had to remove the strainer too, cleaned that up, don't know if he used a new gasket there or not, no more leaks.
