fuel leak
Howdy,
this is my first post on this forum, so please excuse me if this is a noob question. I have a fuel leak on my 1980 240D which appears to be coming from around the LARGE fitting on the bottom of my fuel tank. I attempted to tighten it with a large socket, but to no avail. It is currently leaking at a rate of about one drop per second. Is this a common issue? Is there a rubber gasket or o-ring that is prone to deteriorating and must be replaced? OR is this something most remedy with replacing the fuel tank? Thanks, Wes |

That is the tank screen that is leaking. There is an o-ring underneath that seals the screen to the tank. Here is a photo of the screen. Unfortunately you have to empty the tank to get it out to replace the o-ring. It could also be leaking at the joint where the hose threads into the tanks screen.

yeah, large fitting would be tank screen. you need a new o-ring you may be able to get away with a rubber conditioning fuel additive for a short while, if that works at all.

I recently had both of those hoses replaced on my SD. The mechanic mentioned he had to remove the strainer too, cleaned that up, don't know if he used a new gasket there or not, no more leaks.
