New model primer pump
 

Hey Guys

Just got the new primer pump today and can't find any documentation on replacement procedure. Do you take the whole housing off? Do you have to take the big brass nuts off to get to the pump base. The fuel hoses are very brittle. I guess it's time to replace them. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

The old style is probably 2 times as big as the new one. You'll prob need to undo some fuel lines to get the old one unscrewed from the lift pump.

I haven't done the job myself but I think a crows foot wrench should work.

What works really good is a plumbers faucet wrench, its got a nice big perpendicular handle that you can really get some torque on. If your cars a Euro you have to remove the fuel lines.

I had to pump my primer a good long time when changing filters.
Next time I change the filters, would it be worth it to get the new
primer pump? Is it a worthy upgrade? Even if I went from 40 pumps
to 10 that would be worth it;)

The bigger advantage is that it won't eventually fail and start leaking or letting in air.

Fill your secondary filter with some kind of combustible liquid (ATF, Diesel, Purge, etc) before reinstalling and you shouldn't need to pump at all.

You mean automatic transmission fluid? That's a hoot.

ATF works. Bio works as would most fuel additives also. Filling with D2 is preferable.

You could use SVO/WVO but I wouldnt unless I was in the boonies and I only had only turn of the key left on my battery.

Replaced my old style primer pump with a newer style that I got from the salvage yard. {'81 wagon} The old primer pump didn't have a copper sealing ring. Wonder if that is why it was pouring. I installed the new pump with a copper ring from my Harbor Freight kit. It certainly ain't the exact replacement, a little wide really, but we'll see. Couldn't start it as the SLS lines and reservoir are off right now.

Is there any way that my pump could be on backwards? It is the exact opposite from the one in the DIY picture. The pump being on the inside with the brass nuts on the outside. If I take the whole assembly off is there anything I can screw up?

As I said in post 5, if your car is a EURO you need to take off the fuel lines to install the primer pump, is your car a Euro?

Job is done, It is a euro. As usual took 4 times longer than expected, and had to buy new hose due to the brittleness of the old ones.
