84 300D Steering
It appears that I have too much wheel play based on quidance from the shop maunal. The procedure for correcting this calls for measuring the torque at the steering wheel which requires a wrench with a very low torque range, and then turning the steering box backlash adjusting screw to correct. Any one know of another way to do this?

not really, borrow or rent an inch pound torque wrench and proper tools to do the job right.
You may need to rebuild the gear box.

If you have more than 1" or so of play at the wheel rim try adjusting the steering box gear lash.

Usually you can adjust the steering box. I suggest a search for it here if you don't know how.
