Newbie oil change question

1975 240D 115: Can someone please tell me what size allen wrench I need to unscrew the oil pan drain bolt with? It is bigger than a 12mm, I THINK it is a 14mm, but not sure. I am going to have to order the thing, because no-one around here carries anything that large, except Sears, but they only have it as a set of 4 for $40. And apart from the fact that I am really cheap, I'm probably not going to use 2 of the other 3 sockets (3/8" and something else), so I can't see spending $40 on a set of wrenches that I'm not going to use. Thanks, Alex

Harbor Freight it is! Went there yesterday for the first time, that place is awesome. Broght home the blank gift certificates, have been leaving them in strategic locations like wife's purse, wife's dashboard, wife's sock drawer, etc. Changed the oil last night and wow that stuff is black when it runs down your arm. In a pinch, if you need a 14mm hex drain-plug adapter and don't have the factory tool, or the desire to buy a pricey allen set, you can use a common hardware-store coupling-nut. A coupling nut is designed to connect two threaded rods. It's like a regular nut but about an inch long, so it will fit in the drain-plug, with enough left exposed to hold a wrench or socket. I believe a 5/16 or 3/8 coupling-nut should work here, but check where you buy. Dimensions on these couplng-nuts don't always follow regular SAE nuts exactly. For the 14mm drain-plug, the hex needs to fit a 9/16 wrench or socket.

Happy Motoring, Mark
