190 5spd worth saving?

Hi Guys,

Sadly the transmission went out on my 1984 190d 5spd. Car creeps forward in every gear, including reverse. Everything else on the car is great (sans the non functioning sunroof and drivers window). It got wonderful MPG, around 40, and leaked a little oil in the process. It's paint and body are nearly perfect without any rust. Shop says they estimate repairs to be 2500 plus labor for a rebuilt tranny.

Is the car worth it? Is it worth trying to sell with a busted tranny? Should I just donate it to charity? If I keep it and sell it I'll probably have to tow it back to my home which could cost $400. (I was on a trip when it failed.)

I've heard the 190d 5spd is somewhat rare, but is it really worth saving?
Thanks for the help out,
-Isaac

Diesel @ 8.oo per gallon

Think the 201's tranny is worth saving now?

2500.00 is a little steep.

By all means fix it, trannys are not that big of a deal. 190d 5speeds are very rare and usually go for a good amount of $$! Are your sure its not just the shifter linkages that have an issue?

Think about it for a minute. When a manual trans vehicle creeps it's not the trans that is
broken. It would be the transfer mechnanism. So you need to look into adjusting the clutch. this is usually done by adjusting the friction point of the clutch. The throwout bearing might need replacing, the clutch itself, and the pressure plate. That's usually the whole clutch system. I don't know if it's hydraulic or cable activated. If it's hydraulic, meaning there will be a clutch fluid resevoir, like the brake system, you can first bleed the clutch slave cylinder. You'll need a second person and some brake/clutch fluid. If it's cable activated, you can adjusted the linkage on the pushrod to the throwout bearing. Try this first before you fork over any $$ to an out of town mechanic, or trash the car.
If you don't have a work manual, search here on this site for someone who can walk you through it. I'm not familiar with your year and model as all my benzes are 85 and older automatics. good luck. Let us all know how you make out.

It also could be a failing pressure plate.

the original post said it creeps forward even in reverse. If not for this I would perhaps think it is the clutch master or slave, they use brake fluid so you would get a low brake fluid warning light if the fluid is low. but with the forward creep in reverse, I dont know how to internet trouble shoot. could be linkage or the shifter, does it seem to snap into gear or slush into gear? mercedes have a very notchy snap feel to their shifters, it feels positive when it goes in gear.

190D's

Almost every 190D 5-speed is worth saving. Where is this broken down car located?

This does not seem to me to be a linkage problem.
