If you can obtain the original computer stuff from a sprinter it may not be all that difficult.....I am sure harder swaps than that have been done. I'd never want to try though.

Thumbs up Transplant a OM612 Mercedes Engine into a 300E

Hello,

I want to do exactly the same. Looking for such an engine for my 300E.

Think it will be a nice improvement, plus economy.

Where do you find them at 3000 bucks?

What do you think you will do to get the computer?

into this:

190D 2.5 turbo?

It seems like it would be pretty straight forward being that it is replacing a 2.5 diesel I-5 with a 2.7 diesel I-5. The newer engine has computer control, but the fuel computer seems like it could be easily retained / heatshielded inside the engine compartment. The engine came out of a Sprinter van, but I know it was also put into Euro C & E class sedans, so engine-height issues shouldn't happen. Does anyone know if bolt patterns for transmissions / flywheels have changed, on this basically-an-updated version (CDI and DOHC, nice!) of the OM602? The engine is selling for $3000, which seems like a bargain for a CDI Mercedes engine. As a point of reference, I see them all the time on fleabay for roughly the same price, so this isn't a lowball offer.

I don't know if I'm the only one on here that has thought of this, but it could be a worthwhile upgrade for anyone who has a 5cyl. W201 or W124. Plus 154HP and 243ft-lbs. of torque sounds like fun.

Avoid electronically controled diesels?

Alastair,

Interesting point of view that of yours. To be taken into consideration, I think.

It is my case too: I am also seeking a OM 612 diesel engine to swap for my present mechanical diesel.

The only way to do that, in my opinion, is to get a used engine with all of its associated electronics, AND a manual as for install those sensors and the computer properly. There is an opportunity for some experienced mechanic to set up such a manual or to offer the service.

Getting the computer and sensors is possible (cheap) in a dissasembling yard, i.e. from a crashed vehicle, so they are probably working, provided they are in good shape at sight.

The question is that these 611, 612 or 651 engines are a lot more efficient than the ones you mentioned. Tha´s why many dream of them.

Instead of getting out my present mechanic engine to put a OM 612 or such on it´s place, I would to do that in another vehicle, one that I don´t need to use.

Added to that, You'll need the fuel-management specifically for the OM-612,--Nothing else will do the job....

In my book, its really a non starter from the beginning....

Better bet would be an OM 603 turbo or even an OM606 Turbo Much easier installation job, and Infinately more reliable!

OM 612 engine swap

Despite the fact it may be difficult to fool the electronic system of that engine, it is a magnificent engine.

I was travelling once to Argentina crossing the Andes on a Kia Sportage TDI 4x4, only two passengers, no load. A Mercedes Sprinter passed us climbing up the road very easily and I got astonished.
It was impossible catch it up.

This is engine OM 612? It is miles away of others.

I hope you succeed with it.

Remember there is a gentleman in Germany who swapped a similar CDI engine into a 190E. He´s name is Peter Lehmann in case you don´t know him. He made the engine work. Just is case it is of help to you.

Good luck and keep us all informed of your progress.
