Steering wheel shake

1979 300TD The steering wheel will shake, and the whole car every time a minor bumb is hit. What would cause this? It seems kind of dangerous to drive, and my brother will be heading to college saturday.

thanks

One, or more than one, of the following is the culprit:

Lower ball joints
Lower control arm bushings
Tie rods
Upper control arms (with ball joint)
Center link
Idler arm
steering damper

Which tie rod goes on which side? In the parts section, it says "right" or "left" when it should read "passenger" or "driver."

The driver sits on the left.

That's because each side has a "right" and a "left". In order to adjust the length of the assembly, the ends have either a left hand thread or a right hand thread.

You need one of each on either side.

From left to right:

Left wheel - tie rod assembly (L & R plus center rod) - steering box - center link - idler - tie rod assembly (L & R plus center rod) - right wheel.

Jim

That being said, shake after a bump is indicative of a really worn/out of alignment front end.
