Mobil 1 0W20 in 1999 E300DT

Just changed my oil to mobil1 0W20 AFE.
Anyone have any opinions about using this oil on my turbo diesel?

Regards!

1. Is it a diesel-rated oil?
2. Sounds too light.

The label does not say anything about diesel rating. All it says is that it meets and exceeds the requirements of 5w-20 and 10w-20 oils. Since I was using 10W-20 before, I figured I would give this a try.

As Jeremy said........you need a Diesel API rated oil ie. CJ-4, or any one that starts with a "C" rating and states on the bottle for diesel engines. Also the blend should be a heavier blend ending in 40 for summer ie. 15w40 for dino or 5w40 for synthetic.

The oils designed for diesel use have additives and dispersants that keep the carbon soot in suspension. Without them the carbon clumps into a gooy sludge.......not good! Stick with a Diesel API rated oil no matter what.....

I'm pretty shure 0w-20 is way thin. Check your owners manual or buy a hanes manual at the parts store. I Suggest you change your oil to a diesel rated 10w-50 or 20w-50 such as mobil delvac, amsoil or rotella.

Yeah why in the world are you running 0w20 gasser oil in a diesel??? Use a proper oil like Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel, they make it for a reason!

0W40 comes from the factory as is appropriate for Europe and NA.

Can you actually buy a 0W20 oil? That weight might be good for Fairbanks in the winter months where they average 0F to -45F daytime temps.

OK...OK..guys...easy.
I was just trying to find an oil to get the best fuel economy. I will change it back to a heavier diesel rated oil.
Considering fuel economy is my main priority, what should I use 5W-30, or as the Mobil1 website recommends 0W-30....any feedback is appreciated

Whats wrong with using the weight it was designed to use?

Can you even measure the supposed fuel gain between 30 and 40 weights?

You are looking at gasoline oils, you need a DIESEL oil. Which would be the 5w40 or 15w40 stuff.

Yes, do not drive that car anywhere until you put the properly rated oil in it..... 0w20 is no where close and the ticking time bomb under your hood will go sooner than later.

Jalazia.......seriously you would get more MPG out of putting a coat of wax on the 99 and overinflating the tires than running a light wgt. unapproved oil in a Diesel engine. No one is picking on you....we just don't want to see you turn your car into a toasted sludge pot!

Cheers,

Not picking on but one should use more thought when doing things like this. Its akin to putting a lovecrap conversion on a 07 ML and wondering a, why the car doesnt work anymore and b, why mercedes won't cover it under warranty.

You should use neither. Your main priority should be making sure you're properly maintaining the vehicle.

An engine costs way more than some fuel, so getting the right oil in ther ASAP is what you need to do!
