Question OM616 into a greymarket excanator????

Folks,

My neighbor has an older Yanmar B-1 (I think) Excavator......it's diesel engine has given up, and is nearly impossible to find parts for......I have this '77 240D op the hollow in my parts stash.....I got to wondering.....

Has anyone tried to transplant an OM616 into anything hydraulically driven???

There appears to be enough room......and the Excavator has a Yanmar Diesel driving a hydraulic pump.......the hydraulics run everything......

One would need to fabricate some sort of hydraulic pump mount to bolt onto the engine....perhaps from cutting the bell housing part of the Auto Xmission.....and a Lovejoy coupling to connect the pump to the flywheel......

This idea is just in it's formative stage......and I figure that someone here has done something similar......all ideas will be appreciated......

SB

Oh yeah, the 616 has a bit more horsepower than the Yanmar....!!!!

Sounds feasible. What kind of governor is on the Yanmar? That will be the biggest difficulty.

Yanmar also makes some John Deere tractors. I'm surprised parts are hard to come by. Maybe try the JD dealer..?

You will need to govern the speed of the OM616 at whatever speed the hyd pump calls for. Not sure how you could do this. I know some reefer units used MB diesels. Maybe a governor from one of those would work.
I'd think it would be easier to find yanmar parts.

Play with low- and high-limit stops on the IP until the throttle is limited to that particular range?

This won't really work as the engine load will change (thus the rpm will change as well) I believe 616's were used in several industrial apps like boats. I would try and come up with a governor off one of those.

My UNIMOG has a simple belt driven governor that mounts like any other accessory. It has an input lever and an output lever. One goes to the throttle and the other to the carb. I bought it off ebay for like $40 or something like that.

Something like this:

Lightbulb Hmmmmm......

Folks,

I hadn't really considered the Governor......I sorta think that the 240D's "Idle Control" would handle the task.....but if the idea goes further I will discuss this with an old time Bosch FI Tech.....should be fairly easy tho.....

From my Marine Engineering days, I do remember that the shape of the "helix" machined into the FI Pump plunger has a lot to do with the actual "efficiency" of "Stationary" engines.......timing for port opening and port closing and stuff like that.....

Grey market Yanmar stuff is extremely difficult to locate.....KSD Diesel in Clarksburg, WV (the shop that I use), had a similar engine several years ago and it took them over a year to round up enough valves to overhaul the head.....and this is just one of the areas that need to be addressed....

Most of the dealers in Grey market Yanmar stuff....that can be found via Google have already been contacted to no avail......

Maybe one of our European or Asian readers may have a good contact.....

SB

As far as the Yanmar parts issue....I would not have believed in the difficulty of locating parts until I got involved in this project.....

Simple solution

How about a foot throttle at the operator?

This is pretty much how I run my old MF loader. I set the engine RPM at a fast idle then throttle it as I load her down. Much more pleasant than hearing the engine rev with no load.
