SDL transmission question

When first started, if I don't idle for a minute or so, the car will not move. Once it idles for a short while, it moves fine.

Would a really dirty transmission filter possibly cause this?
It also shifts erratically at times.

Is the fluid low?
Does it smell burnt?

Change the fluid and filter (Do a search on the site for step by step instructions) Then make sure the fluid is at the proper level.

short version of a long story....

when I originally bought the car, the seller was suppose to trailer it here because the engine was seized (ok, another story but....)
Instead, he 'dollied' it with the rear on the ground
So, at the time (and including now), I did not have the money for a transmission rebuild (I already had an engine replacement), so, we changed the fluid and filter, including the TC.
So, it has about 4500 miles on it and been OK, not great, but OK. This action only started a week or so ago, so I'm thinking that it might have gotten junk out of the various nooks and crannies to plug or semi-plug the filter.

I know that in the near future a rebuild is in the making.

Sounds like the trans is letting fluid out of the torque converter or something and the system has to re-pressurize each time you start the car....or it could be another issue. Fluid level ok?

not sure about the speed, but probably 500 miles......not good....

He towed behind a Uhaul truck, but he did say it was slow going.

Well....almost......

Seems the immediate problem was....... a fuel leak.......

Yup.....fuel sprayed from the return hose all over all the vacuum lines and the result was several of them parted.....I had just checked all of them a few days ago.

Go figger.....

Fixed the fuel leak, washed down the engine compartment, and replaced at least 5 vacuum hoses. For whatever reason the fuel made the vacuum hoses soft, allowing them to slide off.

Looks like I'll milk a few more miles out of her before the major tranny fix..

Whoopee !!
