Can you make a recording of the sound and post it on youtube? I think you're probably hearing normal diesel sounds, but a clip would tell us for sure.

I dont have any way to record it man....if it was normal diesel sound I don't think it would fade in and out..it would be constant wouldnt it?

They aren't always constant. Most diesel engines I've dealt with are a lot louder when cold, quiet down considerably once up to operating temperature, and can get quieter still after being worked hard. The quality of the sound is also going to vary depending on rpm and load.

It was warm...it had been run like an italian tune up cause I liked how it was alot more free revving...I did several sprints with it...and heard this whether it was warm or cold...

are you going to bring it down for the A/C work? I can check the timing chain stretch if you bring gaskets. you're going to need intake crossover and valve cover gaskets. we can change the bad glow plugs that you need at the same time.

One hint to help us with the a/c also john...maybe able to tell us what we need..is looking at the compressor...the front end of the compressor moves regardless of where to temperature dial is set ( think this is how you turned the a/c on is these benz wasn't it?) Anyways with no buttons turned on and the fans off the front of the ac compressor moves with the back regardless of where I put the temp at and whehter the a/c is on or not...shouldn't it engage and disengage? What does this indicate I need?

Revving you car up and holding it will not damage it. As long as you dont go over 4500rpm. The tick tick tick you hear might just be the IP. I believe that they are responsible for the ticking noise but im not entirely sure. Maybe you should adjust the valves and while your in there check for chain stretch. Both could cause a air/fuel problem and result in pinging

I think he has the 603 engine with the hydraulic lifters. No valve adjustment required.
