Do a diesel purge, then take it from there.

Lubro Moly goes to the line, thats the only way to purge.

What will that fix or help?

If you have mild carbon build up, yes it should work. Or else the costly way of servicing injectors and pump with professional head carbon cleaning.

Why waste your money, get the nozzles changed and get em pop tested.

Buying new ones won't help at all if there's nothing wrong with the old ones.
Have you thought of building a pop tester? anyone know how to use a diesel pop tester? Have you checked your timing? http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/OM617TimingChainStretch Are you hearing the normal diesel clatter or is it really pinging??

Try this...
IF you have the OM 603 (six cylinder) and you're hearing it at lower RPM, as you say, 'before boost' - for sake of argument - just above idle but below 1300 RPM, under light throttle? One of the idiosyncrasies of these motors when it has lots of miles. BTW, how many miles are on the engine, timing chain and injectors?
There is a good chance that it's a combination of timing chain elongation and injection timing combined to cause nailing. This can be ruled out by testing the injectors (something that should be done in the neighborhood of every 100K miles.) If they pop at good pressure and spray well, they are not the cause. Do a search for 'injection timing' and 'chain stretch'. While checking the timing chain, the other possibility of weak lifters can be checked. This engine does NOT have an adjustable valve system BUT there have been forum members, myself included, who put in Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck synthetic 5-W30 and lifter noise has improved. LM Diesel Purge will work for a little while on dirty injectors but if the problem is mechanical no brand of "tool box in a can" will be any more than a quick fix.

Here's the other.
These procedures are from the factory manual.
The chain check and lifter check can be done at the same time. Checking injection timing is here in the forum somewhere. I only have it in PDF and it's too big to upload - same for adjustments.

Try the LubroMoly Diesel Purge. If it doesn't fix it, it's time to pull the injectors.

Ok I ran two cans of the purge....Verdict....the car is alot quieter and so is the pinging but its still there but very faint...
I noticed with the DIesel Purge, no smoke at all...what the diesel Purge did do is it made the "huff" of the engine MUCH queiter...it idles quieter accelerates smoother and much quieter and the car seems the be MUCH more free revving...although it feels like it has less torque behind it now accelerating... The bad side of this is becuase the "huff" of the engine is soo much quieter it made the other noises much more prominent...like at idle there is this intermittent ticking....its like the car is sitting there idling and you will here it fade in "tick tick tick tick" and then you will hear it fade back out....then back in...its very light but very sharp and annoying...and with the engine quieter its much more prominent... The bad side of this is it makes me paranoid that I hurt the engine somehow...cause there were times running the purge where I would start at 1k and then bring it up to 2k rpms and hold it there for 2 mins then bring it up to 3k and hold it there for a minute maybe a little longer then let off for a few minutes...the car never got hot at all...but I did do this numerous times but only brought it up to 3500k and above just to rev it and let off.....I guess the engine being alot quieter now makes that ticking more prominent than before and me paranoid... The pinging did diminish though it is still there but hard to hear...very faint...is there anyway I can add a little more fuel to stop the pinging? I mean the only time the car smoked was when I hooked the diesel back up..it did not seem like it cleaned anything out visually but it did make a difference and there were a few times revving her up and then letting off where she died running on that purge...and on the second can the idle got rather rough but was fine with diesel hooked back up... Any input on this? |
