Just look at prices for nice examples of the old full-size Jeep Grand Wagoneers. Condition and documentation will fetch some crazy (to some) prices.

One things for sure, it may be a lot of $$ for a car that old....but what can you get currently for $14k? A piece of junk, most cars are more, and they're still junky. A 14k mint wagon is a lot more car for the $$ than most anything else. Although with 14k I'd probably get a really nice W140 S500 or something.....much newer and much more fun.

You can/should probably talk him down a few grand or five. The premium you pay for a TD, excess of $10,000, might quickly depreciate if you drive it daily and use it for its intended purposes. Something to consider.

I'd pay $14k for a concourse wagon... 10 miles on the odometer and all that concourse good stuff....
I need to stop reading up on concourse judging.. its getting to me |

You may be more comfortable, and may be able to enjoy a cheaper wagon.

if its basically brand new, then it is worth it.
Your basically getting a new Mercedes Benz for 14k. people spend more than that on Honda civics. What your getting is a "new" car that is built better than any other vehicle on the road and that is going to give you undoubtedly hundreds of thousands of miles of service not to mention the fact that their safe vehicles.

Yes depending on your reasons.
When I first got into the MB diesel scene, I would have said unequivocally
no way. After completing my 300TD, I'd say perhaps it would be worth it.. IF..in fact the car is perfect, AND you know how to discern that accurately. IF.. all records are there from birth and included everything by the book. It would have to be a car that was always garaged, never even driven in the rain. I would certainly buy a brand new, unused 85 300TD FED in a box for perhaps 30,000. What other car could you get now for that price that would be as good? I have 5200.00 in my car now. I never would have paid that initially. After doing all the fix-ups, and charging for my labor, I'd be into it for 10,000 anyway. You just have to think about value TO YOU. IF you are buying it for an investment, forget it. If you want a close to perfect car to USE, then it's up to you. I've always found, after restoring some "perfect" level cars, that they turn out to be more a burden than a pleasure. I've almost got this TD past the point of "usefullness". If a car is "too good", it gets much too hard to just use it without worry, well to me anyway. For me, at 14K, it would have to be so perfect, that after several days with it, I couldn't find anything to fuss with. IMHO the car sounds like about 11,000. Check out the "hippyflip" link though. If true the car could go for 20 grand.

Total value?
How much would your insurance company give you for it if you got creamed by a 3/4 Ton Suburban on your way home from picking it up?

Too much!
Think of it like a house. It has a value from three points of view:
1) Market value 2) Economic value 3) Replacement value Market value is what you could get for it if you turned around and tried to sell it. I would be very surprised if you could get $9K or $10K. Sure you see cars like this going for premium bucks like on the referenced "hippie" web site. But these guys are professionals and have a track record and reputation. A private seller cannot command that much. Economic value? It is certainly worth that much compared to what else you could buy for $14K. They don't make them like this anymore. You could have this car for a long long time and certainly get your money's worth out of it in terms of $'s per mile. This is a rough calculation, but $14K / 300,000 miles is $.05 per mile. A new car for $22K that will go 150,000 is $.15 per mile. There are a lot of other variable's like maintenance and fuel price, but that gets you started. Replacement value? You can't replace it as they don't make them anymore, but if they did, the price would be high. Keep in mind that there is a risk you will bear in that if you or someone else totals it, your insurance company might give you $5K. If you buy it, get comparables and ask them to insure it for what you paid for it. I would offer $10K at most and decide how much higher you are willing to go. I doubt that the seller has anyone else lined up at that price. This may be a nice car, but there is always another bus coming down the road if you miss this one. Don't fall in love with it or else your negotiating position is greatly impaired.

RML you said it well.
You said it much better than I did, however we think quite alike.
Another member mentioned a newer model, such as a 99 plus. I chose an 85 for the simple fact that it has no modern "complications", i.e. electronics and such. I need very few specialized tools to keep this car going. The TCPM will be MUCH lower if I can do all the maintenance and diagnostics at home. I'll give up a good margin in modern convenience/performance, for simplicity. I also have a 66 truck and an old BMW airhead motorcycle for the same reasons. If the OP has the ability to recognize a "perfect" car, I still say 14K is not too much, depending on what he needs. I got my wagon for 3800.00 It has 106,000 miles. It's pretty good now after base-lining it. I have 5200.00 in it plus quite a few hours. Now just imperfect enough cosmetically to actually use. Everything mechanical works very well. I'm still parking it way out in the parking lot , even though it was supposed to be my driver/beater, at this point it's getting Sunday car treatment. If someone offered me 10k in cash, I would be flattered, but would not even consider for a moment, taking the deal. Perhaps I'd take 12,500, but I'd have to think about it. Really nice low mileage TDs are a pretty hard find I'd say. I could spend half an hour with this car and let you know,heh..then perhaps I'd sell you mine for 12,000.

The keyword is MINT. Find a MINT VW convertible Karman Ghia. How about a MINT 911. How about a 1972 2002 tii?
"Don't fall in love with it or else your negotiating position is greatly impaired." Thats never happened to me. OK, maybe that 1978 Mars Red Super Beetle which was "almost" MINT with 17K on it. update: looks like they are asking NADA book value: http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-22-1-5013-0-0-0&l=1&w=22&p=1&f=5014&y=1985&m=1115&d=4220&c=7&vi=76752&z=05446&da=-1 OMG, look at what they list for a 1972 tii: http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-22-1-5013-0-0-0&l=1&w=22&p=1&f=5014&y=1972&m=1026&d=1481&c=7&vi=62455&z=05446&da=1 OK, so maybe I shoould have restored that one.
