ignition issues!!...

My friend has an 83 300D turbo. The ignition will not turn anymore.Got a replacement cylinder from phil, but in order to install it the key cylinder must turn to allow the removal tool access!!Have tried all the tricks in my bag,all to no avail.I have tried jiggling, vibration(palm sander),removal of whole mechanism(seems impossible with key cylinder in), lube(graphite),and just plain force.Key will not turn.Meanwhile car is parked on street with window down!Any suggestions on getting key to turn and/or closing window would be GREATLY appreciated.Oh,key can be inserted and removed normally, just wont turn anymore.

I HOPE you don't have to...

resort to it BUT it looks like you might have to pull out the dash.

I know there's a write up on this forum on it.

I dont have the fuse diagram for your car,but if you look in the cover of the fuse box there should be one there.Find the fuse for the window that is down and use a jumper wire from the battery positive post to connect to the top of the fuse and the window should work.Good luck with the tumbler replacement,on my 91 300D i had to remove the guage panel to get to the bolts that hold the steering column up then drop the column down to make room to get the cutoff wheel on my dremel in there.Use the black reinforced cutoff wheels that are about 1-1/2" diameter these made quick work of the hardened collar, once thats out of the way you can get the hardened piece off the front of the tumbler (part with the slot for the key) then you can get the tools in to release the collar and tumbler. The Dremel works good but makes a mess with very fine steel powder all over so cover everything you can and have a vacuum handy if possible. If you are parked on the street you may have to borrow/rent a small portable generator to do all this,i didnt have muck luck with a battery Dremel that i used to own. Looks like its time to drill that sucker OUT, i did on my 300SD, what you do first take a screwdriver and pry open the key hole, then take the biggest drill bit and wack it in there and drill like not tomorrow, after you got all the metal locking bits out then start drilling at 12 position until you drill out the lock that holds the black cap (that thing that's around the tumbler) and then you should be able to take out the cap and slip out the black cap and tumbler.... and also i took out my steering locking mechenism make it easier to turn the key

Good luck...
