Shipping an engine by common carrier is a difficult job. You have to have the engine well contained in a box or on a good pallet, then you have to get it too the trucking company, and it usually has to be picked up from the trucking company. All the way around, it is cumbersome, difficult and expensive. And it costs a lot to go and pick one up also. I got a heck of a deal through a forum member this summer for a 3.0 six cylinder gas. Had to go 700 plus miles one way to pick it up. Fuel, motel, toll and a couple hamburgers soon runs up past $700.00. So considering your time and costs, it is probably a better deal to buy an engine for $1000.00 in your area then to run 700 miles for a $400.00 deal.

Here in the Washington DC area, most salvage yards are part of the Brandywine Group, and charge several hundred more than Pick-N-Pull for a used engine.

Don't get me wrong, if China's engine ever fails I will more than likely go the PNP route, you simply have to know what your up against before the process starts. There is no better part for the price than PNP, and if you can hit a half price day even better.
But uh, not much in the way of customer service at all........[folks are usually polite, just don't deviate from the exact norm.]

Late last summer was the first time in over 20 years that I visited what is now the Virginia Beach Pick-N-Pull. The place used to be the usual local hole-in-the-wall salvage-yard with an office-trailer. Now they have a large air-conditioned building/lobby with a streamlined entry and checkout setup. If I'd noticed on that trip that they had rolling-cranes availible to pull & move engines, I might have tried to get the engine, manual tranny and related hardware for possible transplant into my automatic 240D. But it was a very miserable, hot & sticky week, I didn't have a truck availible, and my brother would have a fit if he found major 240D parts stuffed in our parent's Virginia Beach garage. (I was able to hide some bulky but relatively light-weight W123 fenders and bumpers in the attic!)
My biggest gripe with Pick-N-Pull is the limited time a vehicle stays until it's crushed.
So far as customer service is concerned, many DC area salvage yards will pull parts for you, and have various popular items like taillights, AC compressors and engines already pulled and cataloged, but prices tend to be 3 or 4 times higher, and they never have half-price sales!

I just called the PNP and they said it is $150/engine plus $50 core. There are a few engines that were in cars that were clearly committed to the yard due to crashes....maybe I should pick one up as a spare...

I would feel best about pulling an engine from a wrecked car! Had to be under power most likely when the crash occurred.
With my luck I'll pull the bad engine from somebody's parts car that was hit while it sat in front of their house......

Or maybe after it rolled down a hill and ran into a garage door.....

Speaking of engines....there is an 82 300TD in the boneyard with about 188K on it.....if I recall the odometer correctly. Drive up in your truck and I'll help you pull it.

Ironic that it wasn't running when it took it's most famous trip!

It won't be purring at all until I get some CV's.....

I saw the car, the engine didn't look bad or anything the car looks like it was sitting in a bad part of town and got ransacked

The engine still had lots of oil, didn't see any thing weird under the valve cover...
I would just fell better if it didn't have 198k on it.
If it had wheels I would probably just take the whole car (spare trannie and such)

Nope. I just wouldn't buy anything from anyone that requires a down payment to confirm that it is operational.

They say its 80k, came out of a crash, they don't do compression tests, they want $975 for it and theres a $100 core. It could have a transmission with it. I'm going to look at it later.

Two other things what the rules about PMing here? And how much dose a 616 wight any ways?
