Engine Price?
Hi all,
Does $875 sounds like a lot for a 616 engine? its from a 82 240D with 188k miles They have done a compression test but didn't have the numbers handy when I called. Also what should I do to it before I put it in, and do I need to balance the flywheel if it has a flex plate? Any one remember who on here is selling a 240D in Arizona? I saw it in his sig the other night but forgot to note who it was.... Thanks, Nathan. |

Since they probably pulled it out of a sub $1,000 parts car, there may be some wiggle room. Not a completely unreasonable price, though, if its in good shape.
Here's Diesel Clack's ad for the 240D 1982 240 D Rust free Arizona Car!

Thanks for the ad, a bit out of my range though It's very nice.
They said they where asking $1,000 for it... (Mmm Hmm) I was hoping for like $500 but I guess if its in good shape... there is one other place here but I've heard the guy is a little... 'fun' to work with... Nathan |

That car is a bargain. Think of all the savings you'll have with so many mechanical issues already addressed. Anything cheaper than that, unless its a steal, you'll likely catch up in deferred maint./repairs in a hurry.

It really is, just don't have the money right now. If I did I would probably buy it... Just wish it was a four speed

We got a 617 turbo with everything attached but a starter for $550 and only 161k on it. So....$875 does sound high for a 616....

You see here is the problem. You are in AZ and have what we want in the North East which is clean solid rust free bodies (who cares about the drivetrain), and we have what you want which is cheap rusted out cars with good drivetrains. I say $500 tops, but I'm in rustville where people get rid of whole cars for $500 because they have rust and don't pass inspection.

With the cost of fuel you wouldn't make any money. Then factor in the time... unless you just want to take a "vacation".

I got them down to $700 but it has 198k on it and they wont do a compression test with out a deposit
I could get the whole car for like $1100 but it's in really bad shape it doesn't even have wheels! (I don't think my boss would like a old junker on her trailer with no good way of getting it off.) Calling 'All Mercedes' Later to see what they have. Nathan. |

Try to find a Pick-N-Pull!
The Virginia Beach Pick-N-Pull had a wrecked but rust-free stick 240D last summer. They get $175 for engines. The 240D engine turned over OK so I was tempted but didn't have the time to pull it, or a way to get it home. Boo Hoo! Happy Motoring, Mark

As long as you get your deposit back if the engine doesn't have good compression. And yall should agree beforehand what "good" compression numbers would be......
Pick N Pull engines are a real crapshoot. Might be a great deal, might be a worn out engine. Now you do get to exchange if it isn't good, but they have to have another one available and it has to be done within a certain amount of time usually. And nobody has less customer service than a wrecking yard.....

OK not having the compression numbers readily available makes this a nogo. They are probably upquoting you something from the hollander exchange. I would check car-part.com to see whats in the neighborhood and contact the seller directly.

Here in the Washington DC area, most salvage yards are part of the Brandywine Group, and charge several hundred more than Pick-N-Pull for a used engine. Happy Motoring, Mark
