Leaky fuel tank cap...

Can the rubber replacment gasket used on the oil fill cap be used on the fuel tank cap? I noticed that diesel tends to drip out around the fuel cap after a left turn.

Thanks!

They are the same. You can even use the tank cap as an oil cap and the other way around.

Sorta. The caps are different, but I think the gasket is the same.

I tried using my fuel cap on my engine once (in an emergency). It did not leak oil as badly as with no oil cap, but it did leak and I also got the side of my car covered in diesel.

You can actually afford to get your tank that full?

The fuel and oil cap seals are not identical. Different dimensions and different material.

I agree, with the different sizes anyway. In a pinch you can swap 'em tho.

On the left is a fuel cap, the right, oil.

I really do not want to replace the fuel cap, just the gasket. Even if I have to manually cut one out, I'll do it.

I do not run my car to empty, about half a tank is as low as I go so I can "afford" to fill 'er up. When D2 was $2 a gallon, then I would let it go until the reserve light came on.

Buy the gasket for the metal type oil cap.

You might try this in a pinch. Gently remove the gasket and turn it over, replace it, it'll likely not have an indentation on the back side and it should seal. I just did this with an oil cap and it worked perfectly.
