Brake-pad replacement light
... comes on whenever I am sitting at an intersection holding the brake down all the way. I had new brake-pads put in 2.5 years ago ... do they usually go this fast? How urgent an issue is this? Not that I want to drive it around on worndown pads, but is it something I need to do tomorrow?

You should have quite a bit of pad left when the light comes on, assuming that the pads have worn evenly. Sometimes, however, uneven wear or separation of the pad from the backing plate could be cause for a more urgent response. Typically, there is no need to park the vehicle the instant the light illuminates. You should have thousands of miles to go before metal meets metal.

You can always take the front tires off and see how much pad is left. That will tell you for sure how long you have.

Depending on your driving style 2.5 years is about right for the light to come on, but you can usually go another 2-3,000 miles before you need to change them.

I believe the sensor wears though when the pad is down to about 3mm. Orig thickness on my 99's pads is ~13mm. Is not hard to take a peek at them.
Wear can vary dramaticaly pending driving style. Some folks wear a set out in 20-30K; others 60 or 80K. It amy also be a probelm with the sensor itself.

Thanks guys. I'll pop the wheels off and take a look on Thursday, assuming it doesn't rain on me. I'll check out the condition of the sensors, too. At least this looks like a job I can do myself ... good to have things to keep me busy, been a bad couple of weeks.
