Sorry for your loss, that coup is worth way more to all of us here than the insurance company books say. If you dont drive that much you can get a classic car insurance policy for these vehicles with a stated value, that way they will have to fix it or give you a fair replacement value. Dont back down and insist they fix the vehicle or find you a replacement. Also go for the limit on any personal injury claim you may be due, MY back and head are hurting just looking at that rear end. Good luck.

My dad got hit like that, though not as bad, he paid $550 and they pulled it back out, looks almost like it never happened. Should see what the body shop can do. So sad to see a coupe meet that fate.
Lots and lots of good parts on that car though if you decide it has to be totaled/parted out. What kind of vehicle hit you? How badly damaged was it? I hope the driver got their cell phone jammed into their head.

That's awful. My 300cd has already been hit once by a USPS van, run off the highway, I figure it's a matter of time until it gets totaled. Kind of makes me want to sell it and buy a beater but I don't want to do that.

Ouch! Bet that costs $4k to get fixed "properly." As you know once they are banged up like that, they are never the same again.

oldiesel, Thanks for the web site. I already started to contact Classic Car Appraisers in the area so I can be ready for my battle with the insurance company. I hope to have it appraised by the end of next week. I had just mentioned to my wife last week that I wanted to get the classic plates on the car and have it appraised and update the insurance just in case something like this happens. A few weeks ago I installed new rotors, brake pads, sensors, brake lines and front bearings. Last week I changed the oil and fuel filters, I was also going to do the PS filter but never got around to it. We want to thank you all for your kind words and advise!!!

I'd fight for a complete repair based on low mileage and classic coupe body style. If they don't want to settle this way, insist on 3rd party arbitration.

Oh no, how dreadful... it was a really nice car too, but the bright side is no one was seriously injured/killed. Looks like the crush zones certainly did their job!
I bet it was an Accord that hit you since it did that much damage. The newer Accords are tanks believe it or not (from about 2003-up). I think a Civic would have been totaled, but I may be wrong, because those are really well-built cars now as well, but I think with the way a Civic sets (low) that it would have done lower damage. Here is a 2008 Accord (ironically at a Mercedes dealer in Atlanta) - did it look like this style? I was rear-ended about two months ago at a traffic signal. @ the time, I was driving my grandmothers old 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville (with HUGE metal bumpers). All of a sudden, a lady in a new Nissan Quest smashed right into the back of me! She was going at least 20-25 mph! It certainly jarred me. She got out and asked if I was OK and I said yes and she said there was no damage to my car. I took her word and I was OK and went on (which was foolish I know). I went onto work and did not see any damage to my car, but when I pulled out, I noticed her bumper was smashed and a parking light! I did feel a little strange that day though... my back and legs felt funny, so I think I should have got checked out. I was like that for about a week, but then it went away, but I have a bad back/legs anyway because of a crash in 1994 and I guess that aggravated it. Thats a bad spot, despite being a 25mph residential area, because two days ago, a oncoming car went off of the road and hit one of those large city garbage cans in someones front lawn! It tossed it about 30 ft and it went on the front porch! Thankfully it was not a person, or someone was standing in front of that house. That red Subaru kept roaring on. I know it had to have done some damage. I guess they were dialing a phone. Moron? Careless? Who knows? Hope all works out with the repairs/replacement car and that you both make a full recovery! |

Makes me want to install sharp 3 foot long steel shock absorbing barbed rods on the back of my car to completely destroy whatever hits me, and do even more damage when they pull it away.
I'm guessing the law enforcement wouldn't want that on my car though.

Err, Not quite-- But a good old fashioned Tow-Bar makes good defence against low speed impacts.... Recently had one of those nasty plastic Suzuki 4x4 run into my BMW.... There was nothing much left of the 4x4 but the BMW only suffered a minor scratch to the rear end!

Sorry bout the accident, I know it can be a real PITA.
But I'm glad your both OK. My GF's son works in the ER. He told me a story yesterday about a woman who's fiance bought her a new BMW. She got hit in the rear and turned her head around to look back and got hit again. She is now a paraplegic. You have a lot to be grateful for! Danny

Read the other insurance threads too, but remember this.
Quote:
The reason you will get whatever you want for the car (it IS totalled, by the way, I can tell by looking at it) is because there is (1) absolute liability on the part of the adverse party and (2) there has been injuries by you and your wife, and the insuance company, either hers or yours (if they have to pay because of the uninsured motorists clause of you policy and you in effect sue them) will gladly pay anything they have to, to settle on the car, so long as they have a chance to settle REAL cheap on the neck back and shoulders. That is where the REAL big expenses come for them. They would love to pay you too much for the car if it will make you both go away with way too little for your injuries Remember this.

86560SEL, you are right once again....
It was a newer model accord then, the honda also got re-ended by a Chevy S10pickup in this accident. Again damage to the Honda did not appear to be much.
