Help me figure out whats missing!

Hi All, Im the proud owner of a W124 250D euro, with an N/A OM602 engine. Now I know most of you will never have seen one of these before, but I think you can help. My engine isnt the standard viscous coupled type, and I think it SHOULD be the electromagnetically coupled one but there doesnt seem to be any hint of wiring or anything to suggest this. So, take a look at these pictures and let me know what you think, is this the electro setup with a load of missing parts or what??:

Euro

Looks Greek to me....lol... What's the year? And includes some body pic's man... I kind of like the looks of the engine so far.

Haha, I guess its a bit different! Its a 1991 5 speed manual, and should be almost exactly the same as your 87 300D engine but with the front cylinder chopped off, so its a 2.5l 5 cylinder, and 94hp. Nice and simple compared to the turbo automatics, the worst a vaccum leak will get me is failure to shut off. I'll get some other photos tomorrow and put them up.

I think I've pretty much decided that this should be electromagnetically coupled but has a load of parts missing. I think I'm just going to remove that freewheeling fan and shrowd and put on an electric. I'm in the UK so it never gets that hot, and I dont have AC or a stalled torque converter at idle to suck power and generate heat, so dont really need a big engine driven fan.

I tend to agree with your idea of an electric fan. I wonder if someone mounted that fan clutch when replacing the water pump, which seems to have an over-abundance of gasket sealer. MBZ doesn't use sealers, just good gaskets & seals.

It also appears that the intake-air scoop is missing.

Yeah the whole car is a bit of a bodge job really. It had 9 owners before me, and I have a feeling it was used as a taxi at some point. Has the diff from a 190e so the speedo is off, and lots of other little issues. But its fun to fix!

With 9 owners, who knows what you'll encounter. But you're right in that it will be fun putting it right. Happy motoring!

He must be either in the UK or in Australia, he's got a right hand drive vehicle! :) Welcome to the forum!

Thanks a lot for the welcome. I've been reading here for a few months now, and learning a lot. Its just a shame that only a little of whats written applies to my car.

Yep, I'm in the UK! Here are some photos as promised. I've now removed the fan and shrowd, will rig up an electric fan when I can find one for the right price. Notice also the spray of all over my hood (bonnet), any guesses on where thats coming from?

My guess....

Good looking car there. I like the simplicity of the 5 speed and Naturally Aspirated 602 engine.

Have you tried using the Mercedes Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC)? By entering the VIN#, you should be able to determine what the correct factory parts were for the original installation.

My guess for the spray under the bonnet is that you have a leaking power steering pump. (Just a guess). Will there be any sort of recognition for a correct guess?

You could well be right. I noticed there is a crack on one of the PS pump mounting holes, and that when the engine is running (idling) something seems to be bubbling up around the bolt. Does the bolt screw straight into the block or something? is that oil bubbling past? I really need to degrease the whole engine and start from the beginning!

I have oil flung around like that under my hood too, in my case its a leaking power steering pump. I intend to re-seal it sometime, but for now adding a 100ml of fluid every couple weeks has been working out fine. :D

Thats a NICE car! I wish I could have one like that! I love the wood shifter!

Cable tie?

Looks like a cable tie in one of your pictures. If it's there to "help" the idler arm tensioner, then that's another item for your list of parts to be replaced.

Only trouble I ever had driving in England was shifting a stick with my left hand -- just couldn't make it move the right way!
