The panel just below and in front of the windshield on my 300D has some rust either side of the vent grilles...

Anyone any idea how this panel comes off, or is it a welded in section...?

I'm not looking at it right now, but IIRC there are a number of round plastic fasteners (4?) along the edge that faces the engine compartment. Open the hood, push in on the center of all the plastic fasteners. I think you then have to extract the fasteners and then pick up the front edge of the plate and pull straight forward to release from under the windshield seal.

your talking about the cowl ,its also sealed with rubber bonding ,not to hard to remove just follow the above mentioned steps and make a carefull pull with a knife edge along the piece all around .

I had a horrible feeling it might have been a 'permanent' welded in panel--Now all I need is to find a good donor vehicle panel!

dont forget to remove the wiper arms first.

that is also where they hide the wiper motor (on a 123, anyways).
