606 Cleaning EGR and Replacing Delivery Pump washers

this weekend. What else should I consider doing while I have the intake manifold off? I replaced my glowplugs about 30K ago. Fuel lines and shut-off valve were replaced last week. So, I'm wondering if anyone had suggestions as to other items to check while I'm "in there".

The breather plumbing is made of rubber and plastic components; the rubber parts turn hard and brittle with time and heat. Being brittle, they lose flexibility and leak oil all over the valve cover; they also break apart when you try to remove them. If they are not now actively leaking, consider replacing the rubber parts at a later date. See this thread for more discussion of the subject.

Also check any vacuum hoses that are under the intake manifold and replace them if they look the slightest bit old. Your time is a lot more valuable than a few bits of hose.

Lukily the turbo has none of the parts of the non-turbo version. The vent system consists of a single tube routed to the turbo inlet...

Ed, I've read that you have to remove the bolts for the intake tube (EGR) from the bottom of the car. Keep us posted on how it goes. I have to do this soom myself.

There is one bolt accessed from below and one on a clamp on the side of the EGR that you can reach from the top usually, especially if the last guy who put it back did it from the side and not from below.

A tip to reinstall the bottom bolt is to put a dab of white grease into the hex head if you don't have a magentic tool and it will stick to the wrench, then you can use a 24" extension from beneath to get it into the hole. If you are lucky you'll get it back together in about the same 5 minutes it takes to get it apart.

Ed - it sound like you have recently taken care of all of the other items under there, so just do the DVs carefully, follow the torque procedures when you replace them and you should be good to go. Good luck!

Do yourself a favor and leave the delivery valve element and collar inside the pressure holder alone.

Definitely. I was reading the DIY on this procedure and will not mess with taking the valve element out of the holder. I'm going to take it slow and careful. Plus, my diesel mechanic is letting me use his garage to do this one. I'm sure I can get some guidance from him during the process if I get stuck or have questions. I'll definitely owe him some beers after this.

I completed my delivery valve seals and egr cleaning on Saturday morning. Everything went well. No problems at all. Thank you for your advice. Especially TMAllison. Those PM's about the delivery valve helped me out.
