Fuel Line - Strainer to Feed Line - Anybody used regular Fitting

I am about to replace my fuel tank strainer to feed line .

It is the brass connector with attached rubber line, 38cm of 7mm line.

Has anybody ever substituted a standard brass fitting with barbed nipple ?

Then use standard fuel line and repalce it when it leaks.

In 24 years this will be my 2nd time replaceing on the 1980 300D.
Not bad, and the part is only $16 here on FastLane (cheaper than the dealer
by 25 percent).

But if I used a fitting I would not have to order special parts next time.

Any thoughts ?

Part number: 116 4701475 (dealer number)
E5000-15506 (Fast Lane Part Number)

you can take a hack saw a carefully cut the brass ring squeezing the hose and when you pull it off you will find a barbed fitting ready to accept the new hose. problem solved

I did the same but with a coarse flat file; regular 5/16" hose fits.

I have seen that done, however, it weeped just enough to take out the axle boot below it. In the long run, it is probably cheaper to use the proper part.

In the famous words of Click and Clack: "The cheapskate always pays more in the long run."

I have done that on several cars, no problem, you might have "nicked" a barb.

I didn't do it, the P.O. did. I have encountered a variety of creative maintenance procedures which had been used on that car. (This would be the 240D Euro). Every time I think I have found 'em all, another one pops up.

I cut mine off with a cutting wheel on a dremel tool. I don't consider it a shortcut. The only difference between the original part and the repaired one is that with a stainless clamp instead of a crimped fitting, it can be tightened. In my view that's a superior system.

I would guess many pages of "creative maintenance procedures" could be generated here

Cutting and replacing the line allows you to use biodiesel-safe hose
