Red face Blew my 350s turbo :(

As I was driving to dinner the other night the turbo on my 350SDL started doing an imitation of a police siren. 10 miles later the sound stopped and the car started driving itself. Turning the key off with the car in drive did stop the motor. Bad news is that I'm 4 hours from home :/

So now I'm looking for a new turbo. Did all the 603s get the same unit?

No. The 3.5L got a bigger compressor wheel.

Those 3.5's seem like they just like to have things go wrong! Good luck with finding a compressor though, I wonder if the 3.0 compressor would work despite being smaller? No idea.

I believe the 3.0 turbo will bolt on, just don't need the ARV on it. I have a spare turbo for a 3.0 BTW if you want it, personally I'd suggest buying one from a 3.5 unless you can't find one.

What's the ARV?

Got the car towed back to Michigan, I'll pull the turbo this evening and see how bad it is. If it can be rebuilt I might do that.

ARV = Air Recirculation Valve, a 603-only gadget, the purpose of which I used to understand. Having disabled it (for testing purposes), I have forgotten what it does.

How you look after winching 4200 LBS of 'benz onto a trailer when it's 93* and 80% humidity (I'm on the right. VeeDubTDI is on the left):

The culpret:

My friend started to loosen the oil feed line and said "This feels funny". I felt it and could feel the tear, and took this out of focus picture. I'm going to call the exhaust shop that replaced the downpipe the day before this failed tomorrow... That explains all the oil we found in the engine bay, and under the car... The turbo's shaft is broken.

Important warning!

Wow....thats just scary. So it wasn't the turbo's fault at all! Just because a pipe failed the turbo gets oil starved...kaboom. Jeeze. Just more to be paranoid about.

At least its pretty easily fixed!

Hmm, so you think that oil line was broken the whole time? I would think that it would have pumped out all of the crankcase oil, and the low oil light would have come on.

looks like an exhaust shop owes you a turbo, thats if they claim responsibility.

I thought that was strange, the turbo's on these engines usualy don't fail.

Someone/something nicked the oil line and it seized. Without the oil film protecting the shaft the turbo would seize pretty fast.

That must have been some leak, you didn't notice it?

Even if they don't I bet a judge in small claims court sure will. Just think with all extra loot you could get a nice big VNT turbo on there . How much oil is left on the dipstick?

The low oil light never came on, and I can't say for certain how much the dipstick went down, but it's now at the bottom of the "good" area.

I'm wondering if the line got kinked, flow restricted, then at some point it finally broke. Perhaps from the vibration when the exhaust vane busted off? I agree... i wouldn't have been able to drive 260 miles if the line had been broken the whole time.

From the ID plate it looks like the PN is 0040962599 - A0040962599.
