Don't beat yourself up. My dad used to say "If you aren't making any mistakes you're not doing much". This is going to be an expensive lesson but believe me it could be worse.....(Don't ask me how I know).

A bump starter is typically a spring loaded switch that you connect to the 1 and 3 terminals at the junction in front of the battery. I have one but last time I did this I just used two screwdrivers to make the connection.

Man that sucks!. I bet you weren't wearing eye protection (not that I do when adj valves). Be thankful the schrapnel didn't hit you in the eye when it let go.

Yeah, I thought about that schrapnel thing and was quite glad it didn't hit me in the eye. So that's a good start.

I guess my next step here is to pull the head and have at it. I've looked for link on this site for info on pulling the head but I can't find one. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I reckon the Haynes would cover the head gasket job. one thing is to loosen and tighten the bolts in sequence.

And you prolly want a hoist/lift/come-a-long or something- the head is HEAVY.
