1983 617 swap into a 1980 300D NA?

I am wondering if a 1983 617 with auto trans would be a possible candidate for my 1980 240D or my friends 1980 300d NA. for his 300d, since it is an auto, i assume it would be fairly the same, but are there any major issues that would prevent this swap?

the guy who has the engine says it has been stored for several years (indoors) and ran fine before it was pulled. the car was rear ended. in what way would i have to prepare the engine, so i dont hurt it any when i try to fire it up.

For the first startup? Put clean oil in it, turn the crank around by hand one full cycle (all cylinders full cycle, I mean) and then hit the starter and see what happens if nothing feels locked up.

After that you can worry about cleaning it out more.

Getting the Tach to work will be problematic. Also make sure you swap the GP relay and associated stuff. Other than that should be straight forward.

The tach is an hour of simple wiring if you have an amp and two-pin tach display.

... I would go pull a rear end and speedo from an 82+ 300D so the gearing will be normal for the motor. otherwise you will be SINGING quite high as the car cruises at 70MpH...
