PLEASE HELP.. i have a chaing rail thats cracked and engine makes noise
hey guys .. i just bought this car from oregon, and drove home to los angeles. when i got it from there the engine was making noise like clapping noise from the top section, i took a chance and drove it home .. a 8 hour drive. the car drove perfect, it just had that clapping noise. so heres the deal.. the motor had been previously redone, about 20k ago. now we opened up the valve cover did a valve adjustment,. those were fine, and realized that the chain guide is cracked on the top section, right by the tensioner, so we took out the tensioner, and the screw that bolts on to the block, its a pin on that screw, its the banana shaped guide, we cant get that damn thing out... we have a new one, and looks like its suppose to come right out after taking out the tensioner, how do i take this thing out,, and do you think the noise couldve been from that? please advise asap.. thanks. oh its a 1982 300td. wagon.

The slide rail is held in by a pin. It is located on the front of the engine. The pin has a threaded hole in it, that a removal tool screws into. You are supposed to buy a special tool to remove the pin, although it can be removed with a slide hammer. Also the camshaft sprocket must be unbolted and moved to the side to allow the rail to be pulled out. I zip tied the chain on the sprocket and marked its relationship to the camshaft before moving it to the side.
its quite a pain in the butt. you need to remove the radiator/fan/shroud if you are going the slide hammer route.

Its possible to use a bolt of the right size/thread, a couple of washers and a socket to remove the pin from the chain-D rail....
Its a good idea to use a tap to clean out the threads before trying to remove the pin, as rust/crud usually fills the threaded hole, and the last thing you need is to break a bolt off in the threads....... Good idea to use a new pin when re-assembling too....
