Speedo cable

Hi all,
I have a whining noise that has come and gone for about a year. I posted a while ago about it here with sound clips of the noise and no one could really help me, although the speedo cable was suggested. Well the noise is back, driving me nuts, and I want to settle this. Can I just disconnect it from the transmission (car in my sig), drive it around, and if the noise is gone there is my problem? Then I can lube it or replace it. If the noise is still there I at least definitely know it is not the speedo cable. Any tips on how to disconnect it, I've searched and not found very much.

Thanks in advance.

removing the spedo at the trans is not hard to do. follow it where it comes out of the firewall, down under the car to the transmission. It connects on the left rear side, held in with a 10mm bolt. remove the bolt and the cable will pull out.

don`t think you want to drive around with the hole open on the trans. might want to put something in the hole to keep out dirt.

the cables I have seen are sort of sealed on the ends. the center rotating part does not come out. had a problem one time and discovered this.

my problem was the spedo head itself. spedo jammed and snapped off the cable at the spedo.

you might also pull the cluster forward and unscrew the cable from the back of the spedo and then push the cluster back in.
