Are steering gear boxes interchangeable?
I was wondering if the steering gear boxes are interchangeable?
I am parting out my 1980 300SD (W116) and I had a guy with a 1983 300D (W123) ask if it would fit. I looked up the part numbers and saw that they were different. But engine numbers are different (i.e. 952 and 951) and they can be swapped, so I thought, maybe it would work. Are you able to swap steering gear boxes between chassis? Thanks! -Ryan

For my 1981 300D, the service manual (CD) talks about at least 3 different steering boxes in that era and cautions about interchanging them.

Check the pressure numbers on the PS pumps.

BTW, I think all W123's had a 65 bar pump.

I am pretty sure that is not true. Atleast in 85.

I am pretty sure the basic boxes are the same on the W116 and W123, but the arm is different.

I am pretty sure they changed in 85 as well. Either way, chances are yes, they will work.
