Okay. I am now pretty confident the transmission will bolt in and work. Last night I ran into a problem. Since the tailshaft swap wont' work, I was deciding whether to
1- Swap speedo assemblies out
2- Swap entire clusters
3- Something else

I quickly was able to rule out #1 as the speedo's were completely different sizes. The mechanical one is much much larger and did not even come close to fitting in the cluster. #2 could work. First the 116 cluster is much smaller so it wouldn't fit nicely. Second I would need to do a lot of wiring as the plugs are different.

I am now considering something else. I guess here are my real options.

A- Put the 120 transmission in and drive without speedometer
B- Buy some aftermarket mechanical to electrical converter (Was told $100 plus)
C- Rebuild my old transmission
D- Buy a used 722.303 transmission

I really don't like option A since this is not a long term solution.
B is probably going to cost me close to what D is.

I would only consider C if I did it myself as I don't have the money to shell out $1500+ on a rebuild. I have done extensive research and it seems doable. Especially since the problems was that it was not upshifting out of 1st gear. I believe I have narrowed it down to three possible problems. Bad valve body. bad governor, bad clutch assembly.

I am currently checking on D. If I can get one shipped to my door for under $500 with at least a 30 day guarantee I will probably go this route and then sell the 722.120 transmission (which buy the way seemed to be the best part of the 116 car. I couldn't believe how well it shifted while I was driving it!)

Did you check the rebuild manuals? I just finished swapping around the tailshafts on two 722.3 transmissions (90mm vs 100mm drive shaft bot postitions) and have eyeballed some of the dead 722.1 transmissions I have here. I think you'll find that the tailshaft part is indeed the same spline pattern, even though the case is completely different.

Hmmm....I assumed that since the case was completely different that it would be incompatible. I didn't think about swapping the internals but not the case. I guess I'll take a look at this option as well. But I won't have time to work on it until Friday so I am looking into the other options in the meantime.

Thanks!

not even the external, just the last part, the tail shaft. It's splined onto the internal stuff. Check out the 722.3 rebuild pdf mentioned here for the picture of the tailshaft assembly...

info on 722.3 - 722.5 transmissions

Also check out the EPC.

Ohh, I see what you are saying. I think you are talking about getting them to properly bolt up.

But isn't the speedometer signal measured on the internals? My main concern in swapping the tailshafts is to get the electrical signal to work on my speedometer. Otherwise I don't think I will be able to get my speedometer to work.

I just went out and looked at the transmissions. I looked at all the electronics attachments. I really don't see how anything would work. I also don't see the point of swapping tailshafts if I'm not doing anything with the electronics as the both look identical.

Am I missing something?

Right now I'm still checking into used trannys.
