98 E300 glow plugs don't heat up
I have a 98 E300 Turbo diesel with 220K miles.
I turned the key to glow the plugs this morning. The check engine light and glow plug light stayed on. After 15 seconds, I turned the key. The engine turned over but would not start. There was a humming sound like the plugs were getting power and when turning over, it sounded like it was getting fuel. Could this be the glow plug relay? I have seen some threads about a 'K40'. What is the 'K40'. Thanks for the help. |

Go to dieselgiant.com and follow the testing tutorial there for the W123 GP's. Relay looks a tad different on the W210 but the principals are the same.
You'll need a multimeter. The K40 relay is in the right side computer appratus box under the hood. Front most unit. I doubt it is the culprit in this instance. It feeds power to many systems similar to what the older OVP relay used to do.

Are you able to pull the code?
If its a P136x series it would be showing an individual GP. (note: some obdii scanners dont register that series). If you've got compression, you ought to be able to manually hold the key and crank it long enough for it to fire up; may run rough for a few minutes. The DG site will tell you whether it is the relay or one or more GP's. Once fixed, the code should erase itself. If its a bad GP check back for more input before attempting to change it.....

I've had trouble with mine in the past where it makes a buzzing sound from the relay. All I did to correct it was to unplug the control wires, clean the contacts and re-install. It's been fine ever since (knock on wood...).

I don't have access to the codes because I don't have a reader.
In the past years, I have experienced problems with leaky lines and bad glow plugs. Based on the sound, I believe that if I crank long enough, the engine will start. I don't like doing this as it puts a load on the battery and starter. This happened all of a sudden. I will test glow plugs and relay this week end. |

I would bet $5 that the GPs are just fine and the problem is with the relay. It would be unlikely that you would experience the loss of enough GPs from one day to the next to cause the car not to start like that...try the unplugging and replugging in the relay plugs and maybe even give it a rap with a screwdriver handle and see if that clears it...either way consider ordering a new relay.

I tested the relay and the tests were successful. I noticed a lot of gritty sand in the connections. I also noticed the plastic cover over the 12V supply was open. I had some air conditioning work done in Aug; maybe they jarred the connections. When I start the car, the glow plug light goes off after 10 seconds. The check engine light stays on; I assume this is a residual from the problem.
I appreciate eveyone's help and comments. |

If it is "fixed" and it was a GP or relay problem then the CEL will turn itself off after three cold, hot, cold run cycles. Usually 1.5 trips for a daily driver.
