Intermitent metallic noise 300D

My recently acquired 1976 300D started to make this unpleasant intermittent metallic noise 2 days ago.

Car has 64000 miles (documented), I just drove it 150 miles on monday on the highway and the car behaved flawlessly.

It starts very well, doesn't smoke and runs well, but whenever I accelerate slowly it sometimes makes a metallic noise (like if you were shaking a bolt in a cup) around 20-30 mph.

Noise is only there when car is in motion, and under load. If you press on gas pedal when car is in park there is no abnormal noise. No abnormal noise when coasting. Noise will last 2-3 seconds and then stops, and comes back seconds or minutes later, only when accelerating. I think it doesn't do it when cruising.

Recent maintenance: repaired ac leak, air filter changed, fuel filter changed. Air filter housing is solid, fan blade looks solid, engine doesn't move or shake so I think mounts are OK, didn't see anything loose under the hood. Oil pressure pegs.

I am a bit obssessive and maybe the noise is nothing serious but it seems to me it didn't make that noise last week.

I will bring it to my mechanic in 2 weeks, do you think I should stop driving it until then? Any ideas?

Until you find out what the noise is, I would not drive it very much, good luck.

Semi-stuck parking brake is a guess. I've got one doing this now and am being lazy about fixing it. I just push the parking brake in and release it until the noise stops. I have two parts cars so it's a case of too many rear drums to care. Bad, bad MB owner.

possible bad bearings somewhere. My car does the same thing only I can only hear it when im next to a wall and the car is accelerating. Its like a metallic grinding noise.

Good point, on mine tho, it was easy to locate the sound, and I heard it at all low speeds, backing up also. As my parking brake shoes had come apart, and were "floating" around.
bluebenz, can you pinpoint the area the noise is coming from?

I lifted the hood with engine running and somebody pressing on the gas pedal but no abnormal noise when car is not moving.

But when I drive the car, it definitely seems to come from under the hood, not wheels and not suspension.

Air filter housing mounts?
Don't know if the W115 has this same issue that most W123 owners run into.
