!#$#@ Plastic Window Regulator Slide
I am getting so tired of these white plastic things breaking.
Is there a better part (aluminum or??) or some type of adjustment that will make them last!! Thanks BR

You mean the plastic insert in the side slider? Never had one break. Are they breaking for getting shredded?

Stop your windows when they hit the gasket, don't keep your finger on the button until it torques the regulator.

I don't...but that does not mean "others" are not doing it.
There should be a limit bumper somewhere that takes the force rather than the plastic...IMHO Thanks Don

There are quite a few other posts on this oft recurring problem. Although I have not had one break in about two years (knock on wood), I have replaced these sliders probably six or eight times on my 81 300SD. The only problem is that MB uses a rivet which must be drilled out and it is tricky to hammer down the new rivet on the replacement. I had a 450SEL which actually had a replaceable slider which did not have this rivet problem.
Some have posted a fix where you use a bolt instead of the rivet. Should be able to find this somewhere but I do not know of any other solution. |

I use an air grinder to get the head off and then use a vise (using a small socket to the face of the rivet) to crush it.
Doing it isn't the issue - I just don't want too. The next time it happens I am going to fabricate one out of Lexan or metal. The other option is to create some type of arm that will act as a stop to take the pressure rather than the plastic part. Quote:

I've never had one break, my dad had the dealer guy break one when joyriding in his car after working on it....they had to fix it though.

If you make that piece out of metal, I wonder what will break in it's place......

You can get away with replacing the plastic slide once or twice.
The regulator eventually becomes twisted. Replace the regulator. It's easier than replacing the slide over and over.

They should have made the whole regulator out of extremely strong titanium, and twice as thick too....as well as using more powerful motors and a limiter switch to stop them at the top and bottom. Then I doubt we'd have window issues. Cut off hands...yes, broken windows no.
