Key Stuck in Rear Hatch Lock

My wife never got the hang of unlocking the rear hatch on our 123 wagon. Now the key is stuck in the horizontal position. Can't turn it either way, but can push it in (won't turn when pushed in either).

I tried the inside door latch and that doesn't actuate anything.

Ideas?? TIA!!

Palm Sander

'slide the clamp over the "Key" activate and see if it'll release the key then.

Try spraying lots of WD40 in there?

Yeah, I try that-- before taking the rear hatch apart.

Do your locks go up and down as they should? Maybe try unlocking and locking with engine running and see if you can turn the key.

Whats up wioth the Garrison pic?

I think you're going to have to take the interior cover off the hatch. Its not that hard, I've become quite proficient at it. The exterior door "grab" is connected with 4 or 6 small studs, the nuts you can get to with the interior of the door removed. Then you can remove the lock cylinder from that...I have pictures if you need them.

Plus it'll give you a good opportunity to tighten (and maybe loctite if you're ambitious) the nuts that hold the rear wiper motor/linkage in place so it won't self destruct in the future. Trust me, its time well spent.

My door locks function properly, I'll try cycling them.

Looks like it'll the int cover will have to come off.

I have occasional issues w/ my hatch lock. I can get inside and work the interior lock up and down several times, it straightens out. for a while.

but is the key actually stuck in the tumbler? wont come out? never had that one. I bet roadside asst would do it for you, if you have it.(AAA, or thru Insurance carrier, etc)

Does the key in the hatch cycle the locks?

The Swede 09-09-2008 10:17 PM

I 'spoze it's stuck in the tumbler.

Never did cycle the locks, not sure if the 123 did.
