Can you swap out the rear diff with axles still connected?
I've got a 1984 wagon that I'm trying to sell and the CV's are bad. I've got a 85 parts car with the 2.88 rear. Can I pull the rear diff out with the axles still connected and swap it into the 84 so I don't have to drain the diff or deal with the c clip/shims?
If I do all this work I may end up keeping it.... Could be a winter bomb. Throw in my Webasto coolant heater. We will see. Dave

According to the FSM, yes you can.

I am literally right in the middle of removing the diff with the driver's side axle still attached. My axles are out of the wheel hubs. I do foresee some trouble navigating around the exhaust pipe, but I can disassemble that if I had to. My on-the-fly judgment/opinion is that if you had some extra jack stands and bottle jacks to support things as they came out, removal of the diff with axles attached would be possible. I can just imagine that the intact contraption (2 axles and diff) could be unwieldy without plenty of extra support as you lower it down.

The FSM says to remove the exhaust system before proceeding with diff/axle removal.

I'm not suprised that it does. I refer to my CD version of the FSM as often as I can, but find its organization difficult sometimes. Most of the DIY articles/pictorials on here demonstrate removal with an intact exhaust system, but having it out of the way would certainly help.

The [paper] FSM (volume 1) lists job #35-010 "Removal and installation of complete rear axle" and would seem to apply here. You would probably have to make do without the special jig (116 5889 10 61) that allows holding the entire package with one jack.
Note that 35-010 has the mechanic removing the wheel hubs as part of the package; since you have your axles out of the hubs already (how did you do that?) you don't have to mess around with the brake lines and shocks. Jeremy
