Clicking sound, loss of power

First off, I want to thank all of you wonderful people here for devoting so much your time to helping your fellow diesel nuts. I've been using these forums for years to learn about my car and fix minor problems. The threads and wiki are so helpful I haven't had to post till now!

My 85 300D with 130k is making a clicking noise followed by a stutter and loss of power in the engine that has been getting more and more frequent. I hear a loud click (sounds similar to the compressor engaging) and then the loss in power, drop in oil pressure engine stutter. This happens both at idle and while accelerating and with my climate system on or off. It seems like the sound is coming from the front of the engine, but I can't see anything slipping. The clicking does occur during preglow which makes me worry it's the injector pump? Also nothing leaking fuel wise as far as I can tell. Car just had new belts and new water pump.

Any thoughts?

The big thing that sounds concerning is the loss of power and lower oil pressure. My first guess is the timing chain or timing chain related. Better inspect it pronto, and don't drive it, as a broken timing chain can have disastrous results.

I doubt the clicking noise you're hearing during preglow is the same clicking tha precedes what you describe.

It definitely is. I hear the quiet click of the glow pugs and, once in a while, this loud, hard click. I should also have mentioned that it can also click repeatedly in bursts in preglow or with the engine running.

I agree with Sam. It would be a real good idea to pull the valve cover and check things out pronto. You can check chain stretch and adjust valves if they haven,t been done in a while.

IIRC, glow plugs do not click. The relay does, but it would be a good idea to check the timing chain and the vacuum pump.

I had the valves done about 40k ago. Is it normal for a timing chain to go on a car with 130k?

I haven't noticed any drop in performance except for when the stuttering happens. I'm assuming that the drop in oil pressure is due to the drop in RPM. It stutters only after it clicks with only one stutter per click. It sounds like some sort of clutch trying to engage that then slips. Anything in terms of fuel supply I should be looking at?

Re the Vacuum pump- what should I be looking for other than leaks, or broken connections?

I don't want my timing chain to go and deal with THAT kind of horrific repair, but I want to rule out simpler things first.

Valves are supposed to be adjusted every 18,000 miles. 40,000 is way over the limit.

Use a mechanic's stethoscope and see if the vacuum pump is ticking. If it is, time for a rebuild. A bad vacuum pump can take out a timing chain.

From what I read, you describe a pattern of ....... Loud click.....drop in rpm and oil pressure.....stutter......sometimes in bursts.

Definitely sounds, and a guess from your description, like something timing chain related. What we're saying is that you should have the problem inspected right away while it is hopefully in its beginning stages. Sure a timing chain shouldn't "normally" fail at this mileage but then failures aren't always "normal". Besides this, it may not be the chain itself but something interfering or loose which could in turn cause it to fail.

The only thing with a clutch is the air-conditioning compressor. If the compressor or clutch is about to go, you might hear a squalling belt but I have trouble seeing how it would cause your engine to stutter.

Are the clicks during preglow loud or does it just sound like a relay clicking? Does your dome light or warning lights tend to "flash" bright then dim?
